The guide gives a school eight decisions and the wording to settle them. It states its reasons briefly and moves on, because a policy that argues with the reader at every step stops being read. This page is where the arguing was put instead.
Nothing here is a rule, and a school can write a sound policy without reading a word of it. It is for the person who has to defend that policy afterwards — to colleagues, to parents, or to a board — and who needs to know which parts of it are load-bearing and which were ours to choose.
Cleverness became cheap.
For most of the last few centuries, schooling rested on a single bet: that the scarce and valuable thing in a person is cleverness — the ability to score high, to recall fast, to carry a large store of knowledge in the head. Whole school systems were built around that bet, examinations included, and for a long time it paid.
Artificial intelligence has called the bet. The machine now recalls and pattern-matches faster than any student we will ever teach, and that ability is becoming ordinary — available to anyone with a connection, at almost no cost. The point has been made most plainly not by educators but by the industry itself: raw intelligence is turning into a commodity, something once precious now as common as tap water.
A school cannot protect the value of a skill that the world has just made ordinary. This is the reason a ban is not merely hard to enforce but beside the point. Forbidding the tool does not restore the worth of the ability it replaced; it only leaves students without either.
Judgment, and where it comes from.
If the machine supplies the cleverness, what is left that it cannot? Judgment — knowing what to do when no one has spelled out the answer; seeing around a corner before you reach it; sensing that the problem in front of you is not the real problem; reading people and situations well enough to ask the right question at all.
Judgment is not taught by explanation. It grows out of context — the accumulated, largely unwritten understanding of why the last three attempts failed, what someone actually needs rather than what they first asked for, how things came to be the way they are. Strip experience down and it is mostly the slow gathering of context.
Context of that kind cannot be lectured in. It is grown by doing — by putting students into real work, early and often, where judgment forms the only way it can. That is the practical consequence for a school: less material memorised to be repeated back, more learned through use, where it stays because it was needed.
Do not rest the policy on a claim that will collapse.
There is a tempting argument that the machine's weakness is that it cannot hold much — that it forgets, that it cannot take in a whole book or a whole project. That argument is already false, and it becomes more false every year. How much these systems can take in at once is enormous and growing.
A policy built on a factual claim about what artificial intelligence cannot do will be tested by a student, and it will lose. When the load-bearing claim collapses, the policy standing on it collapses too — and so does the teacher's credibility on the whole subject.
Write limits that rest on what a school is for, not on what a machine currently cannot manage.
The real limit is not how much the machine can hold; it is what it can reach. Much of the context that matters was never written down anywhere for it to find — it lives in a conversation in a corridor, in an unspoken worry, in a read of the room. The machine has no road to that. And newer systems close the gap steadily on everything that was written down, which is precisely why the durable human part is the unwritten context and the judgment to decide whether the machine's answer fits the situation at all.
A wide education is now the practical one.
Judgment feeds on breadth. The more angles from which a person can read a problem, the better they see around its corners. That reframes the subjects outside a student's strength or intended trade: they are not a detour from preparation for work, they are part of it.
The clearest evidence for this is a decision rather than a statistic. In 1938 Carnegie Institute of Technology — one of the strongest technical schools in the United States — adopted what became known as the Carnegie Plan. Students were to be taught to apply fundamental knowledge to real problems, and those majoring in science and engineering were required to study the humanities and social sciences, on the reasoning that an engineer who does not understand the society being served is a worse engineer. This was not a concession to culture or a gesture at well-roundedness; it was a judgment about what makes a professional competent. It outlasted the president who introduced it and became a permanent part of the curriculum.
There is statistical support as well, and it should be stated carefully rather than oversold. Analyses of people who reach senior leadership have found graduates of broad, general educations appearing far out of proportion to their share of enrolment — around 11 per cent of Fortune 500 chief executives, United States senators and major philanthropy leaders, against roughly 2 per cent of undergraduate enrolment. That is association, not proven cause, and the figures come from one country in 2012. It is consistent with the argument; it does not by itself carry it. The Carnegie Plan does more work here than the numbers do.
Sight can be sharpened. Only God aims it.
Judgment is powerful and it is morally neutral. A swindler has it. A ruthless competitor has it in abundance. It is horsepower with no steering wheel.
So two different things get called wisdom, and a school should be clear about both. There is a common, practical wisdom — sound sense, discernment — and God gives it broadly, to believer and unbeliever alike. There are people outside the faith with more of that everyday wisdom than many inside it. That is real, and we honour it.
Then there is the deeper degree: the wisdom that knows what all that sharp sight is for — sight aimed at what is genuinely good, at the actual flourishing of the people around you. That does not come up out of our own horsepower. "The inspiration of the Almighty gives understanding" (Job 32:8); "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom"; and when a person lacks it, James does not send them back to school — "let him ask God, who gives generously to all" (James 1:5).
This is the gap a school cannot close by teaching. We can grow students' judgment; practice and good instruction genuinely do that. But nothing in a curriculum can aim it. So when a policy about a machine turns to speak of Christ, that is not religion smuggled into a technical matter. It is the refusal to send students out with sharper sight and no idea where to point it.
Which barriers a school lets fall.
Many students struggle to read, and the number grows. In this new age the reading barrier to work is already falling, because the machine reads and writes alongside them — which is a genuine mercy for a student who has been shut out of material their mind could otherwise handle.
But not every barrier should fall. The one between a student and God's Word is the one to hold, because that is where wisdom grows. A school can meet that plainly: Scripture read aloud, listened to, returned to, built into the rhythm of the day rather than left to whoever happens to read well. A student who struggles to decode a page can still soak in Scripture and be made wise by it.
The same question applies more widely, and it belongs in every school's own policy: which difficulties in learning are obstacles worth removing, and which are the work itself?
Shared shape, built locally.
The reasoning above is general. What it produces is not. A school in a city with reliable power and a connection for every student faces a different set of decisions from a school where one shared phone reaches the internet on market day — and both are TEN3 schools.
So the shape is shared and the mechanics are local: teach the tool rather than hide it, grow judgment through real work, widen it with breadth, and aim it at Christ. How that becomes a rule about a particular assignment in a particular classroom is the school's own to decide, and no one outside it is in a position to decide it for them.

The Carnegie Plan was instituted at Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1938 under its president Robert Doherty, requiring science and engineering students to study outside their field and teaching the application of fundamental knowledge to practical problems. It remained in the curriculum after his retirement.
