Transformational Curriculum Dynamics

TEN3's African and international educators are taking the lead in developing the first tertiary program for Africa covering all academic areas, built from the ground up with the Truth as its basis. The system for designing this program is called Transformational Curriculum Dynamics (TCD).

What is a Tertiary Degree? PDF Print E-mail

altIn North America, we are accustomed to many educational terms like elementary school, middle school, high school, college, technical school, vocational school, university, professional school, etc. Often times our terms help us to distinguish between levels of education, but sometimes they refer to the content, the goal, or even the method of education.  Still despite the potential for confusion, through years of hearing these terms, we become comfortable navigating their ranges of meaning.

When we step outside North America  many things change, including the terminology for educational levels and degree programs. In many African countries, the word "college" refers to a middle school or junior high school.  So many Africans would find it strange to hear a 20 year old say, "I'm a college student."  In England the equivalent of a North American Associate's Degree is called a Foundation Degree. In France, the term Baccalauréat refers to the level of education you complete before entering university.  Many of the countries of Africa are former English or French colonies, and still follow those systems of education.

Computer Training Outreach has always been the entry level program offered by the Transformational Education Network.  At the request of our partner schools in Africa, we are now updating that curriculum and using it as a foundation for two tertiary degree programs (a two year associate degree and a four year bachelor degree).

Ken Klay - Chief Technology OfficerKenneth Klay, TEN3's Chief Technology Officer, also serves on the leadership committee responsible for the Computer Training Outreach (CTO) program.  Ken shared recently about the the work of the committee.

The first task is to develop a profile of our incoming students.

Transformational Curriculum Dynamics is the process by which we design curriculum, then create and translate materials that will give teachers the support and help needed in discipling students to conform to the image of Christ. The process involves continual evaluation, revision, and application to multiple areas of study.

1.  Curriculum

The curriculum is the structure we need for writing or selecting material. It has three parts: profile, context and outline. The profile is a description of specific qualities and assets we want the students to gain during the program. The context lists aspects of the student's current situation such as educational standing, location, and access to resources. The outline is the plan or course of action used to accomplish the profile within the given context.
